Georgia's History

Georgia's past is full of big moments that shaped its future.

Founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe, Georgia was one of the original 13 colonies.

During the American Revolution, Georgia played a role in the fight for independence, and George Walton was one of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence.

The state also played a key part in the Civil War and later became the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.
