It is time for a fun, under-the-sea adventure with numbers!

On this adventure, you will use place value to add jewels, seashells, and more to your treasure chest!

Imagine a treasure chest full of numbers.

You can use place value to unlock the key to adding nine to any number less than ten!

Wow!

First, pretend you have five sparkly jewels in your treasure chest, and you want to add nine more.

  • What can you do?

You can use place value to make it easier!

Instead of counting all those jewels one by one, use place value to solve the problem.

  • How?

Make a ten, of course!

You have five jewels in your treasure chest. You need to add nine more.

So first, make a ten!

Look at the picture below.

ten single blocks in columns of five equaling one base ten block

  • What plus five equals ten?

Five!

Add five jewels to the five already in your treasure chest.

Now, you have ten jewels in there!

Wow! That's a lot of jewels!

Next, add the four jewels you have left.

  • How many do you have now?

14 jewels all together!

So, 5 + 9 = 14!

That is awesome!

Now, practice adding nine to another number less than ten.

Time to go back under the sea and collect seashells!

You have two seashells in your treasure chest, and you are adding nine more.

  • What should you do?

Make a ten!

  • What plus two equals ten?

Eight!

Add eight seashells to the two in your treasure chest.

Now you have ten seashells!

Next, add the one seashell you have left.

  • How many do you have now?

11 seashells!

So, 2 + 9 = 11!
