Look at this cool treasure map!

treasure map

With a map like this, you could find amazing buried treasures. But first, you have to know how to read the map.

You have to know that X marks the spot, and you have to know which direction you're facing so you can figure out where to go next.

This is a lot like reading a book.

Before you can figure out what the words mean, you have to know which direction to read them in, and what page to start at.

Get ready to practice following the words on a page in all the right directions, just like a treasure map!

You need to remember three rules to follow the words on the page.

These rules will help you follow the words in the correct order so that the story makes sense.

Rule #1: Left to Right

When you read, you always start on the left side of the page and follow the words from left to right.

If you forget which way is left and right, try holding your hands up like this!

left and right hands with an L on the left hand

Your thumb and pointer finger will make a big letter L on your left hand. That's how you know it's on the left.

L for Left!

Rule #2: Top to Bottom

The second rule for following words on a page is to go from the top to the bottom.

Find the first line at the top of a page, and read that. When you finish that line, you start reading the line below it!

Watch and listen to the fun song below to review reading left to right and top to bottom!

Great job reviewing your first two rules.

  • What happens when you get to the bottom of a page and have read all the lines?

You turn the page!

Rule 3: First Page to Last Page

The last rule to remember when you're following the words in a book is to start on the first page and go to the next page.

You are ready to move on after reading the last line on a page. Turn the page to find the next part of the story, and start at the top!

If you get lost, look for the page numbers.

A number should be along the page's edge. It may be at the bottom or the top, in the corner, or the center of the page.

The numbers on the pages go in order. So, if you just read page 14, the next page should have the number 15!

Now that you've learned all the rules for following words on a page, move to the Got It? section to test your memory!
