Sure, you know how to walk, but have you ever marched like a parade leader or strutted like a superstar? Get ready to jump up and act out some awesome new action words!
Wow! Look at these people moving!
First, check out this band marching.
Now, watch these runners in a marathon.
No way!
The band is marching together to the music, lifting their knees and keeping in step. But the runners are running fast, each going at their own pace to finish the race!
In this lesson, you'll learn fun new action words that tell how people move, like marching and running. Then, you'll act them out and tell your own story!
Verbs are action words! They are words that tell us what we are doing.
Here are some verbs you already know.
Remember, a verb is something you can do!
Wow, you know a lot of verbs already!
Now, learn some fun new verbs that describe how you do the same action.
Think about the band you saw marching with their bagpipes earlier. They aren’t just walking like you might when you're heading to school.
That’s called marching!
When you march, you lift your knees and step to the beat of the music. The band is staying in step, so all their feet move at the same time, just like people in a parade or soldiers marching together.
Now, think about the runners at the marathon.
They’re doing something else. They are running!
Running is moving fast, like when you’re racing to get somewhere. All the runners are going as fast as they can to try to win the race!
Here are some more fun ways to move.
strut | walk proudly, chest out
prance | light, bouncy, playful steps
shuffle | drag feet, slow steps
sprint | run very fast, short bursts |
Try to act each verb out.
Give it a try and see how close you get!
Knowing these words helps you tell stories about how people move — just by using one word.
