There are many different texts about lots of different things!

Sometimes, there are even texts about the same topic!

In this lesson, you are going to see and find things that are the same in a text and see and find things that are different in a text! Let's begin!

You will read two texts about the same topic: counting to 10!

However, you will find similarities and differences between these two stories.

You will watch a read-aloud of the story Count to 10 with a Mouse by Margaret Wise Brown and a read-aloud of the story Spot Can Count by Eric Hill!

  • So, how do you keep track of what is the same and different in two stories with the same topic?
  • How do you know what to look for that is different?

You can create a Venn diagram!

A Venn diagram is a helpful tool with two circles that overlap. Look at the Venn diagram below.

Venn diagram

You can see that the yellow circle overlaps the blue circle.

In the green section, you can write down similarities between two texts or stories.

Each of the texts you read today will have its own circle.

The yellow circle is only for details you find in the story Count to 10 with a Mouse. The blue circle is only for things you find in Spot Counts from 1 to 10.

Venn diagram

You're ready to look for and find the same and different things in each story!

One thing you can look for is the topic of the story (or the book's topic).

You already know this is the same in these two stories. They are both about counting to 10!

You can also look at the illustrations (or pictures), the characters in the text, and the setting (or where this story takes place). There are other things you can compare and contrast.

As you read today, focus on comparing and contrasting these three things.

  1. the illustrations (or pictures)
  2. the topic (or what the text is about)
  3. the characters

It's time to watch the first read-aloud for Count to 10 with a Mouse.

Now, follow along with the read-aloud Spot Counts from 1 to 10.

Great work!

Now, see if you can find what is the same and what is different about the illustrations (or pictures), the topic, and the characters!

First, look at the illustrations or pictures.

  • Are there pictures in Count to 10 with a Mouse?

Yes!

  • Are there pictures in Spot Counts from 1 to 10?

Yes!

You can add that to your Venn diagram in the green Same in Both section. You can write "has pictures" because they both have pictures (even if they are different kinds of pictures).

illustrations Venn diagram

  • What about the topic?
  • Are these two texts about the same topic?

Yes! They are both about counting to 10!

So you can add "about counting to 10"in your Venn diagram in the green Same in Both section.

topic Venn diagram

  • What about the characters?

Hmmm. Well, there is definitely a character in Count to 10 with a Mouse.

  • A little mouse is counting, right?

Yes!

  • Are there any characters in Spot Counts from 1 to 10?

Yes! But this character is a dog. So, there is a difference between these two texts!

So, you will write "main character is a mouse" in the yellow circle and "main character is a dog" in the blue circle.

Now, try to think about another one on your own!

  • Can you think of another part of these stories that is the same or different?

Good work finding things that are the same and that are different!

Move to the Got It? section to see how much you remember!
