What Exactly Is Google?
The Big Idea
Google is a powerful search engine. That means it helps you find information on the internet.
You can use it to look up just about anything—facts, photos, videos, directions, even translations. All you do is type a word or question into the Google search bar and hit “Enter.”
Where Did It Come From?
Google was created in 1998 by two college students who wanted a better way to organize online information.
They named it after “googol,” a math term for a 1 followed by 100 zeros—a huge number! That’s how much information they hoped to help people find.
Today, Google is more than just search. It offers all sorts of tools.
Google Maps to find locations and directions
Google Images to search for pictures
Google Translate to change words into other languages
Google Docs and Gmail to write and communicate
People use Google every day to learn, solve problems, and stay connected.
