Imagine you're a famous painter, but instead of using colors on a canvas, you're using words!

Whenever you add an adjective to your sentence, you paint a picture for your reader. But, without adjectives, your painting would be pretty dull!

Adjectives help you describe everything—people, places, things, and animals—in a way that brings them to life.

  • Ready to start describing the world like a true word artist?

Dive into adjectives!

What Are Adjectives?

Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns. A noun can be a person, place, thing, or animal.

Adjectives help make your writing more detailed and interesting by answering questions like these.

  • What does it look like?

  • How does it feel?

  • How does it smell or sound?

  • What kind of emotions does it have?

Look at some examples.

  • the big, red balloon
  • Big and red are adjectives that describe the balloon.
  • the soft, fluffy puppy
  • Soft and fluffy describe the puppy’s fur.
  • the loud, exciting concert
  • Loud and exciting tell more about the concert.

Without adjectives, these sentences would be pretty dull! Adding descriptive words can make your writing more colorful and fun.

Describe the Party Dogs!

Look at the picture below.

  • What can you see?
  • How would you describe these fun, party-loving dogs using adjectives?

Happy dogs have a party on a soft blue background

Try to write at least five sentences describing what you see. Use adjectives to talk about their appearance, accessories, and the fun atmosphere.

Be sure to describe how they look, how they might be feeling, and any other details that stand out!

  • Did you write five sentences?

Great job! Look at the examples below to see if you wrote anything similar. The adjectives are in italics.
